In recent years, the conversation surrounding mental health has gained significant traction, shedding light on the importance of understanding the difference between mental health and mental health disorders. While the terms are often used interchangeably by people, it is crucial to distinguish between them to accurately address both the positive aspects of well-being and the challenges individuals may face with mental health disorders.
What is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can contribute to their community. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being and affects how we think, feel, and act.
While mental health disorders:
is a broader category (umbrella) term that encompasses a wide range of conditions that affect an individual’s mental health, including both severe, clinically diagnosed illnesses and less severe or situational mental health issues; all types of mental health issues from mild to severe. The categories are mental illnesses and other mental health conditions
Mental illnesses are more severe, often chronic conditions, typically require clinical diagnosis and significantly impact an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, usually requiring comprehensive treatment, including medication and psychotherapy. Examples are bipolar disorders, major depressive disorders, schizophrenia, etc.
Other mental health conditions, on the other hand, encompass emotional and psychological challenges that can affect anyone at any point in their lives. These can range from mild to moderate, are less severe, may not require a clinical diagnosis, but still impact mental well- being, and can be managed by lifestyle changes, counselling, self-care, and other supportive measures. Examples include stress, mild anxiety, mild depression, grief, adjustment disorders, etc.
However, ignoring mental health disorders can have serious consequences, affecting one’s overall well-being and quality of life. Acknowledging and addressing these challenges proactively is essential to prevent them from escalating into more severe conditions.
Fortunately, there are various avenues through which individuals can access the help they need to navigate their mental health challenges including counselling services and support groups.
By fostering open conversations and promoting awareness about mental health disorders, we can break the stigma surrounding these issues and encourage individuals to seek the support they deserve.
Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health, and taking care of your well- being is a crucial step towards leading a fulfilling and balanced life.
